The same will happen in Marple if the policy is implemented in the Council owned car parks.

Yes, there's another thread started by @Harry specifically on the Car park charges with some useful links.

Interesting to see that the council are considering increasing car park charges in the district centres by 150% in order to increase their revenue. i.e. Scrap the one hour 20p charge and increase the two hour charge to 50p.

Also, they are considering charging for parking at Marple station (and others) at both car parks.

Details here http://democracy.stockport.gov.uk/documents/s126778/Enc%204%20Increase%20in%20Parking%20revenues%20draft%20business%20case.pdf

Yes, this seems to have crept up on us almost unnoticed @Harry .

I've just come back from Marple Area Committee and councillors were not very happy about the level of consultation and I think there will be further consultation to be done.

You can skip direct to the item via this link at 9mins and 30 seconds in and it runs until just after the 14th minute:

Notice that the current Council are trying to  introduce parking charges as Romiley station. This will put people off travelling on public transport and encourage on street parking.

The same will happen in Marple if the policy is implemented in the Council owned car parks.

An increase in parking charges is being consulted on, as well as some increases to adult social care charges, as part of the council’s response to central government austerity.
In 2010 40% of the budget came from central Government and a third from Council Tax. The Tory/LibDem coalition austerity program included big cuts to central Government funding. By 2020 the central funds will cease, apart from education which has to be passed on to schools.
In the 7 years since 2010 SMBC has lost £100M and in the 3 years to 2020 will lose another £50M.
However we have record numbers of elderly and children in care. By 2022 we will need an extra £10M just to cover that increased need.
