Local Elections 2019: The Results

Thank you to everyone who voted Green. It was a brilliant night for us across Stockport, with our best ever local election results.

Well done to the other candidates that weren't elected this time, but have worked so hard on their campaigns and done such a lot of good things for the community over the past year.  I was very pleased to see lots of Green things in most candidates campaigns!  I'm always eager to work with anyone with shared values, so please do get in touch to discuss ways in which we can work together to bring about positive changes for our community.

Thanks to @Carolyn Leather and to @Claire Vibert for their kind and magnanimous words.  The local result did reflect a national trend for Lib Dems, Greens and independent candidates, but the 45% turnout is massive for a local election, even when voters are relatively happy with the political classes.  It reflects a lot of work put in by most candidates and that people in Marple can be bothered.  Thank you Marple and High Lane!

Carolyn is right in that green issues are now being taken very seriously and a major issue.  More important, I would hazard, than the current Brexit mess.

All agreed Andrew. I'd also add that the Liberal Democrats were all elected as Liberal Democrats whereas the coming Mayor Laura Booth was in fact elected as a Liberal Democrat but defected to Labour.  One might argue therefore this weakens Labours case.

Leaving aside the Euro debate it will be interesting to turn our mind to what happen on our local council now. We have 2 parties tied on 26 seats each and a rump of a Tory groyp plus the three Heald Green Independents who's constitution doesn't allow them to make political decisions. The Liberal Democrats geary had the highest proportion of the vote across Stockport.  How do our local politicans desolate the dilemma we have placed them in?

I have read three things on this.

Firstly that the Heald Green Ratepayers usually go with the incumbent (i.e. Labour).

Secondly, Labour remain in charge until the Annual Council Meeting on 21 May.

And that the Mayor has the casting vote if required.  The next Mayor is from Labour.

I think the EU will last a bit longer than that; I'd give it a year or two.

Immediately after the 2016 referendum the pundits were all prophesying that Brexit would be the beginning of a domino effect and other countries would follow.  That is now looking unlikely - other countries have seen what a car crash it is, and opinion polls in most other EU countries show increasing support for membership.

Let's hope so.  And with the polling day less than three weeks away, I think we can safely assume we'll be taking part in the EU elections.  As Andrewbowden points out, even if the Tories and Labour reach an agreement, it is unlikely to get through Parliament. 

What a mess.......

Not to mention both parties imminent implosion in support bases the moment a pen is put to paper from having a done a deal with the devil.

Let's hope so.  And with the polling day less than three weeks away, I think we can safely assume we'll be taking part in the EU elections.  As Andrewbowden points out, even if the Tories and Labour reach an agreement, it is unlikely to get through Parliament.

There wont be any

Labour and the Tories may concoct a deal.  But there is no guarantee either party will go along with it and actually get it through Parliament.

I wouldn't place bets on there not being elections for the European Parliament in this country in a few weeks time.
