Zoom talk: ‘The Art of Garnishing Churches’

The art of garnishing churches Friday 29 January at 7pm

In recent years St Martin’s Low Marple has made a brave show at Christmas with its Christmas Tree Festival. Not this year, alas, owing to the pandemic. But we can perhaps compensate to a small degree by looking back in history. This short Zoom talk (with pictures) provides a glimpse of how St Martin’s and other local churches decorated themselves for Christmas in the closing years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th. “Garnishing” churches was a well-developed art, and also offered opportunities for community involvement, not least between hopeful young ladies and eligible curates.
