Some of your
questions answered:
Will I be able to get to the
shops?
Yes. Access to the shops will be ensured at all
times.
Is the work continuing through the
busy Christmas period?
No. Work will cease on 28th November and
then restart after the 15th January 2004.
Why is the work taking so long?
The current state of the underground
drainage system requires extensive work to bring it up to a standard
that will ensure the new paving will not suffer the same problems
currently being experienced.
Will all of Market Street and
Derby Way be dug up at the same time?
No. The repaving will be carried out in
small sections at a time.
Are the existing trees and
planters being removed?
Yes. The new scheme includes replacement
trees and new seats, all located along the centre of Market Street. On
Derby Way the existing trees are to be kept with new seating provided.

January
2003 - Improvements to Memorial Park Entrance
Stockport
Council held a public consultation exhibition in order that the
public could make comments on draft plans to improve the
Stockport Road entrance to Marple Memorial Park. The exhibition
took place in Marple library from Monday 27th January until
Tuesday 4th February.
The
results from this consultation have now been collated and will
be taken to Area Committee on 19 February. From here, comments
and ideas will then be considered for addition into the plans.
The
current draft plans for the park entrance are primarily aimed at
improving access especially for pedestrians and will enhance the
safety, visibility and appearance of the area. Work on the
project, which represents Phase 1 of further improvements to
improve walking and cycling facilities in the area, is due to
commence in the summer.

Design
students from Ridge Danyers College have gone very public with their
latest works of art. The three students - Gillian Scott, Michelle
Smalley and Lizzie Waggot designed the banners for the Hollins
shopping area of Marple. The installation of their banners marks the
final stages of the Hollins refurbishment project which is an example
of one of the initiatives that was recommended in the Marple Action
Plan. The Action Plan was drawn up after consultation with local
traders, shoppers, the police, schools, private companies and
voluntary organisations who have now formed the Marple Partnership to
drive the Action Plan forward. It covers a wide range of initiatives
for improving the environment, supporting local businesses, tackling
crime and providing better access to Marple village and shops. In
addition to the Hollins project, the toilets have been refurbished,
new signposts put in for pedestrians and marketing seminars for local
traders have been held.
